Celebrating Fans Riot After the Lakers’ Victory Over Celtics

Despite the massive presence of police officers around the Staples Center on Thursday, the jubilant celebrations over the Los Angeles Lakers’ win over Boston Celtics turned to be a riot in scattered sections of the city. Basketball fans and raucous revelers sparked a riot  last night by throwing rocks, bottles and other objects at officers, setting fires, breaking windows and jumping on vehicles.

A police officer punching a 17-year-old woman in the face was captured on video. Based on the report, the incident happened on June 14 when Seattle Police Officer Ian P. Walsh was trying to arrest an 18-year-old male with jaywalking violations across Martin Luther King Jr. Way South around 3:10 p.m. when he spotted four females, including the unnamed minor, do the same thing at the same spot on the road, about 15 feet from a pedestrian crosswalk.

Jamaica Declares State of Emergency Amid Unrest

The Jamaican government declared a state of emergency Sunday in areas of Kingston, the capital, after suspected drug gang members and supporters of a gang leader who is wanted in the United States on gun and drug charges attacked three police stations and traded gunfire with security forces in an attempt to pressure the government to let him remain free. Officials said that two police officers were injured during the attack.
